Blooming Identity
Mona Lisa 685 is part of Mona Lisa Project, an ongoing artistic exploration by Dutch artist Florentijn Bruning. Over a period of twenty five years, the project has evolved into a visual timeline of humanity, documenting the symbols, aesthetics and cultural influences that define our time.
In this portrait, delicate geometric patterns meet flowing floral forms, creating a dialogue between structure and emotion. Layers of vibrant red and warm orange suggest growth, transformation and the continuous renewal of identity. The composition reflects a world in which tradition and contemporary design exist side by side, each enriching the other.
Like every artwork in Mona Lisa Project, this portrait is not a reinterpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece. It is a reflection of the visual language of its own era, capturing the colours, patterns and cultural influences that shape the world we live in today.
Mona Lisa is reimagined in a warm red kimono, her serene gaze as timeless as ever, surrounded by intricate patterns from Florentijn’s own personal pattern database, created during the COVID-19 pandemic while teaching herself the art of digital drawing. Each pattern carries the quiet energy of that extraordinary period of creativity and self-discovery.
