MONA LISA 685
The Digital Evolution of an Icon
Curator's Note
Part of the ongoing Mona Lisa Project, Mona Lisa 685 explores the relationship between identity, pattern, craftsmanship and cultural memory. Every artwork within the project reflects a unique moment in time, together forming an evolving artistic practice that has been developing since 2001.
About this Artwork
Mona Lisa 685 celebrates the visual language of pattern as a universal expression of culture, rhythm and identity. Combining the timeless presence of the Mona Lisa with intricate geometric ornament, the artwork reflects the dialogue between tradition and contemporary digital creation.
The decorative background is composed of original patterns developed by Florentijn Bruning during a period of artistic research and experimentation. Created while exploring digital drawing techniques, these patterns became an important foundation within her artistic practice, introducing a new visual vocabulary that continues to appear throughout the Mona Lisa Project.
The warm palette of reds, pinks and soft blues evokes growth, renewal and quiet confidence. Rather than functioning as decoration alone, the patterns become an integral part of the portrait, expressing the idea that identity is shaped through the layers of history, culture and personal experience.
Created as part of the ongoing Mona Lisa Project, Mona Lisa 685 represents one chapter within an expanding body of work exploring identity, cultural memory and the evolving relationship between humanity, art and technology.
